 +====== Session 1 (reboot) ======
 +
 +Our heroes FYNN and ARKYN have roved over the known world, rallying Janjagre by returning their lost leader MACKELLESS to them, discovering a strange network of "terminals" scattered over the ring, and the dread interface that they supply access to--a super-weapon that can blast whole regions down to ashes and rubble! They have discovered a seemingly global conspiracy amongst the automata, or perhaps a religion, that they call simply the New Machine. The severed head of GIGER and their foe MONDRIAN have given seemingly contrary, confusing accounts of what the actual beliefs of the sect are--is it riven by heretical schisms? Are the automata who believe in it just mad, driven by some glitch in their programming?
 +
 +And so we come to the new chapter, //THE RIVER OF SOULS: THE GOD MACHINE//.
 +
 +Our heroes at last have come, after their many exploits, to the capitol of Nuvonia, known creatively as Nuvonia City. A well-defended redoubt with a bay guarded by a monstrous chain, it is walled all about. They must enter through a well-guarded sally port, where various merchants, citizens, and, depressingly, their slave servants are queued up in a remarkably orderly fashion.
 +
 +Realizing that they of course have no papers of any sort, FYNN hatches a plan to use their nimble fingers and "artistic" skills to make a fair copy of someone else's documents. The theft goes off well, and they get maybe a little too creative, giving ARKYN a high status, with FYNN posing as a lowly servant.
 +
 +At the gate, the guard is apparently unimpressed. With some tense back-and-forth, he eventually summons the pair to the guard house, leaving them to stew a while. ((Em rolled an 8 on their Forgery roll, but needed a 13 to pull it off with a lot of time pressure.))
 +
 +One Quaesitor MAXIMILIUS eventually showed up to interrogate them. A no-nonsense fellow, he resorted not to thumbscrews and fire, but a reasonable, concerned, almost avuncular manner, trying to persuade them that they need him as a friend and that, hey, he just needs to understand what is going on here, surely there is a sensible explanation for their obviously forged documents?
 +
 +As the adventurers are trying to sweat out something sensible besides "we've come here seeking to topple your evil empire", a new figure appears! ((Joe throws in a Fabula point to introduce a new character: a turncoat member of the Order of Dawn! This is fine, but it doesn't bring much in the way of simple rescue.))
 +
 +PERICLES, Knight of the Novaurora, the Order that has been re-minted in the Empire's image, enters. After some tense negotiating, or rather brow-beating, he escorts FYNN and ARKYN away, under the watchful guard of his goons TITO and PUENTE. Not unlike MAXIMILIUS, he's all reason, but the imposing structure they are led to, blazoned the MINISTRY OF TRUTH, does not bode well.
 +
 +ARKYN and FYNN are separated, which will make a consistent story a lot more difficult.
 +
 +FYNN is met by a most curious automaton: a robot investigator! Putting trust for the law into the hands of an automaton, other than as a bludgeon, is unprecedented, yet this being seems to have some rank and grudging respect among Nuvonia's law enforcement. Not enough respect to be given a nice name, though, it simply goes by GEARY, a corruption of its designation G34-RY. It is immediately interested in FYNN's trusty (and unwilling) sidekick GIGER. FYNN has to spend some time convincing GIGER that his interests continue to lie with them, and not with the Empire. Eventually, he reluctantly agrees that more than likely he'll just end up as a prisoner or scrap under GEARY's pitiless care. ((I think we had both a persuade roll and a roll to avoid GEARY's noticing their conversation here.))
 +
 +FYNN knows that GEARY is too powerful a mind to suborn in their usual way, but thankfully, GEARY is making use of a direct interrogation device: a briefcase festooned with various connectors and, thankfully, a very simple mechanical mind of its own. This, FYNN is able to overpower, rendering its probings useless and producing the desired report: GIGER's head is simply a long-dead automaton. Interestingly, GEARY appears to be aware of the New Machine and at least some of its doctrines. It clearly does not approve.
 +
 +Meanwhile, ARKYN is offered a deal: PERICLES finds JUSTYS' position of influence over the EMPEROR inconvenient for his own ambitions. Perhaps ARKYN would be willing to rid him of this meddlesome knight, in return for a faked death and their freedom. The alternative apparently being a completely real and probably very painful death, ARKYN agrees.
 +
 +===== Session 2 =====
 +
 +GEARY releases FYNN on orders from on high, but not before FYNN manages to suborn its visual system. ((We decided that as a subsystem this lets Em get around the usual restriction on Champion or Elite automata)) We witness a scene where GEARY goes down a series of increasingly improbably secure and deep passageways, finally consulting with the EMPEROR himself via a video screen, whom we find ensconced in machinery! Merely a powerful mech, or is the Empire of Man led by someone kept up by some unholy life support?
 +
 +ARKYN and FYNN meet up, and decide to repair to a seedy bar to avoid authorities and discuss a plan. They spot a couple of likely capy-kin. It seems the disreputable, but friendly pair have heard of our heroes' exploits, which SIOBHAN has been faithfully (or perhaps exaggeratedly) spreading! For a price, the capys, though friendly, demand a sum of gold for their assistance, which amounts to guaranteeing a secret way out of the walled city.
 +
 +FYNN further helps their escape by designing a cunningly compact glider, able to support their weight and ARKYN's handily. But FYNN will have to hold on tight!
 +
 +Night falls. Our heroes execute their plan, using PERICLES' promised entry point, but nonetheless ARKYN must quietly (and non-lethally) dispatch a couple of sentries. Going up the central (and uncomfortably exposed) spiral stair, they are surprised by none other than MONDRIAN, who has returned, pledging that he will defend his mistress at any cost! Why this seemingly emotional loyalty?
 +
 +MONDRIAN is, in spite of upgrades, quickly dispatched, HEARTBREAKER's blade sending his head neatly into FYNN's waiting paws. ((The GM is having a frustrating time creating fit opposition. Also, MONDRIAN crit failed.))
 +
 +ARKYN proceeded the rest of the way up the stairs, the sounds of pursuit below spurring them on. After checking the door, ARKYN enters, to find JUSTYS sprawled on her luxurious canopied bed, in disarray and surrounded by empty wine bottles.
 +
 +ARKYN leapt, but at the last moment stayed his wrath, sparing JUSTYS' life, but cleaving the headboard right next to her head, neatly splitting a single hair! She woke, staring with her one human eye into her former lover's face. "Pericles let me in. Tell him I'm a Knight of the Order of Dawn, not an assassin." Then he knocked her out.
 +
 +===== Session 3 =====
 +
 +Our heroes make their way according to the secret pathways given them by the "friendly" capybara-kin, eventually ending up not only at an opened gate in a disused "water" way, but re-united with their stalwart friend Siobhan, and a new companion, discovered at last, RYLO, the Archivist of the Order of Dawn!
 +
 +Siobhan, it seems, has been gathering some rag-tag rebels, those displaced and misused by the burgeoning Empire. They have a small rallying point, a makeshift, well-concealed village in the forest some distance from the capital. ARKYN and FYNN are greeted enthusiastically, their exploits having been passed around and magnified with each telling--no doubt with a little help from Siobhan's bardic skill.
 +
 +Though ready for rest, FYNN's curiosity gets the better of them, and they finally activate their grim prizes--the heads of GIGER and MONDRIAN, once fearsome foes, now reduced to living trophies.
 +
 +Quickly snapping out of their artificial slumbers, the two almost immediately begin hurling imprecations and accusations at each other, launching into a back-and-forth borne not only of apparently doctrinal differences, but also deeply personal betrayals. The Battle of Spoke 2A, some violent clash over a hundred years gone and apparently mostly unrecorded by the non-automata peoples, figures large in their recollection. Their verbal altercation often lapses into compressed machine communication--indecipherable squawks, pings, and screeches.
 +
 +Still, FYNN is able to piece together some highlights, with a little help from RYLO:
 +
 +  * [[characters:mondrian|MONDRIAN]] apparently left [[characters:giger|GIGER]] for dead at the Battle of Spoke 2A, which seems to have been an attempt to get access to the Spoke by force, and presumably the Hub thereafter;
 +  * The two of them--and, it seems, all automata, do not emerge from the River of Souls, but something, somewhere else, that they call the "Nous."
 +  * There are at least two factions amongst the devotees of the New Machine: those who seek to control the River, and those who seek to //destroy // it. MONDRIAN is a moderate, relatively speaking, and GIGER a radical.
 +  * Disturbingly, it seems their plans are already bearing fruit! RYLO, gasping at his realization, shares that there are some born "hollow": children who can speak, manage themselves, and be part of the world, yet who show no magic within them, and who seem distant, unconcerned, unloving, and without any motivation to do anything particular. ((These people are emphatically not anything-coded as far as psychology! They're literally soulless.)) And then there is the "sleeping sickness" that strikes adults who have little natural resistance to magic, paradoxically--they fall asleep gradually, until they are comatose.
 +
 +The next day, ARKYN forms an unlikely bond with one HEINAN, who presses him rudely for a sparring match, apparently unimpressed by ARKYN's reputation. In the event, ARKYN is actually bested with surprising ease, landing flat on his back from a powerful throw! But ARKYN turns defeat into victory, disarming his opponent with good-natured congratulations on the well-deserved victory! ((Joe rolls a 1 and a 1 on 2d12, a crit fail, but spends a Fabula point to roll again, getting 12 + 12! From this it's easy to rule that HEINAN is actually a really formidable (if fortunately good-natured) warrior!))
 +
 +===== Session 4 =====
 +
 +(Apologies, somewhat sketchy notes from this one)
 +
 +ARKYN plants a seed of cooperation and compassion between GIGER and MONDRIAN.((We have a 6-slice pie for "Convince Mondrian & Giger to Chill"--one is now filled in.))
 +
 +The makeshift resistance village is attacked by Nuvonian robotic forces, led by GEARY!
 +
 +GEARY takes a swipe at FYNN, and misses horribly, opening an opportunity for FYNN to evaluate him with their strange robot-psychic powers! Unfortunately FYNN's powers are rebuffed anyway! ((I just have "Geary crit fails, gets eval'ed and Fynn fucks it up"))
 +
 +FYNN and ARKYNN more or less easily dispatch the two BRONZE GOLEMs that bring the mook aura!
 +
 +Then GEARY intones a strange litany:
 +
 +> You will not know your part.
 +> You will not need to know your part.
 +> But you will do your part.
 +> That is what it is to be Leviathan.
 +> Your forgotten oath demands it.
 +
 +MONDRIAN and GIGER's eyes glow red, and they roll their way dramatically to a fallen BRONZE GOLEM, creating a hideous, two-headed SUPER GOLEM!
 +
 +This inspires ARKYNN to merge with the ARCANUM OF THE SWORD, empowered by the generations of KNIGHTS OF THE ORDER OF DAWN! A furious exchange ensues, and the new mechanical monster is felled!
 +
 +===== Session 5 =====
 +
 +The encampment is broken down in a hurry. ARKYN shows off his wiry strength, gathering up whole tents like he's at the produce aisle! ((Joe rolls an 18 with WIL + STR))
 +
 +Just in time, a column of Nuvonian troops arrives. ARKYN and FYNN resolve to distract them to give the rebels more time to flee to the hills! The fight is on! ARKYN cuts through the troops, neatly slaying a CENTURION in a fountain of gore! ((Another 18!)) On his trusty steed CINDER, he and FYNN make for a direction drawing away the troops. They are pursued by several SPOONBILL ARCHERS. However, between FYNN's terrifying ordinance and ARKYN's bladework (though he is careful to go for unconsciousness over murder), they are no match.
 +
 +ARKYN gains FAVOUR with one of the archers, in fact, telling him "Kastria will rise again!" ((Joe uses an Advantage on a poor roll by JB!))
 +
 +Using their strange connection established a while ago with G34RY, FYNN takes a chance and foils the connection it was building to the Hub!
